Via Times Arts: Typhoon Seasons Greetings, A Season of Hope Amidst Adversity
The Holidays have come! The time of the year when we celebrate and thank God for what we have and the blessings the past year have brought – whether it be new friendships or family, new experiences, learnings and even new treasures we acquired that make our lives better. It is a season for joy in the company of our loved ones.
For my husband Baron and myself, the past few years has brought on a new meaning to this time – typhoon season.
Since 2010, right around the holidays, we would find ourselves busy – not with Christmas shopping or decorating but – getting people together or performing to raise funds for victims of disasters in the Philippines. It started with Typhoon Ondoy, Sendong, Bopha and now, the Bohol earthquake and typhoon Haiyan only a few weeks apart.
I will admit that I was beginning to get desensitized by news of calamities in the Philippines. After all, it happens all the time. Life goes back to normal after a while.
But this fateful calamity that hit my husband’s hometown Tacloban, the hardest and adversely affected a lot of our friends’ families made me see more sides to just what I find in the headlines, stories that pushed me see to the bigger picture.
